For voice students, we usually warm up, do technical exercises working on varying registers and techniques, and then work on repertoire. I often find the passages in a particular song that the student is struggling with and focus in on those, finding exercises to guide the student. In 2013, I was the first jazz vibraphonist be accepted in to The Juilliard School where I had the opportunity to mentor classical percussionists on how to improvise. For beginners I start with Nancy Fabers books. There are colorful pictures and notes and easy steps on how to start to play and enjoy. I had a very successful year with Nancy Fabers materials. Once the children know the music alphabet, they can play any song they like. With advanced students, I start from what they know already and continue to explore all musical elements. I like to choose appropriate grade level music that the child would like, whether it is a classical or pop song. Read More

For beginners, I normally start with simple melodies and exercises. Scales and tunes can be added at a certain point. From early on, I also focus on ear training - the essential part of music learning - so a student gradually learns to hear what he/she plays. Sight reading music is also incorporated in the process from early stages.
