I started studying at the age of 7 and never looked back. I'm about to graduate with my degree in vocal performance and have already completed my pedagogy requirements. I have 4 years of teaching experience, and 13+ years of performing experience. I primarily perform opera, however I have extensive experience in musical theater, solo jazz and in vocal jazz ensembles, as well as concert and chamber choirs. I am comfortable teaching any of these styles, though of course when it comes to opera younger students will start with art song and other classical styles that are more suited to the less mature voice. Playing music is fun! Lessons should reflect that. One of the things I learned in my studies was to hold my students to their own standard of excellence instead of trying to have them meet my own. In addition to all of the technical aspects of playing an instrument, the greatest asset a musician has is their musical concept of sound. I highly encourage all of my students to listen to the greatest players of their respective instruments. Read More

I Try to get away from mechanism without joy. Everything has to be close to the music. Exercises to be actually doing them with a rhythm and time. Other than doing things musically, practicing in different times and intentions help a lot for the student to be open to play songs in different ways. Technique and theory are necessary tools. To apply concepts musically they need to do it with musical taste. Read More

For beginning students, I focus on building a solid foundation of vocal technique (including: breath, resonance, posture, register, and diction). We build this foundation through singing pieces that the student is familiar with and lots of vocal exercises. At the same time, I like to introduce basic music theory concepts. I typically start with Alfred's Basic Piano Prep Course Theory. Upon grasping and understanding fundamentals, I will begin to introduce repertoire from different styles of music. Read More

As a teacher I take pride in seeing my students grow and develop their own personal connection to music! It is very important to set goals so I encourage students to set their own goals of learning as well as set some lesson oriented goals for them as well. Finding out what interests the student makes my job challenging but fun in the way I can design lessons that will better assist growth! Read More
Instruments: Piano Drums
My teaching style is informal in that the lessons are challenging, but the delivery is casual. It's important for me as a teacher to relate to the student on a personal level, so that I understand what the student wants to do and the direction and path they'd like to take. To see the student progress is most important, but to understand the best method to encourage the student is the primary function of the instructor. Read More

When will I start to see results?
I can site results immediately. The best way to determine if your are making progress is to record oneself on a daily or weekly basis. Then go back to listen to the musical performance. I do this in my studio every day with several instruments I play and music I'm comping. Recording is the best mirror. As a teacher I can provide a perspective to a student, but the best answer is what your ears hear.
I notice results in my progress, by developing calluses on my fingers while playing guitar or strengthening my embouchure while playing Trumpet or Tenor sax. A small amount of muscular pain is a good thing. As long as you do not stress out the muscles the feeling of progress can be noticed through the repetition playing a musical instrument requires.
Perhaps the best way to notice results is how much one hears after a period of time. If you remember what you could grasp a year prior to the moment you realize your ability to hear music has grown, believe me it will be noticed.
How do I know if my child is ready to start lessons?
I have seen music help children who are unable to concentrate and focus. If a child is filled with energy music can be one of the best sedatives. If a child shows an interest in music I highly recommend encouraging this. Learning how to read music has been a great asset for many in terms of learning other important life skills. If a person does not go onto a professional career in music, the time one spends with music will aid one in all kinds of situations. I wrote music for a documentary where children of low soci- economic means used drum circles to calm their pain. Many of these children has seen and suffered things most children never experience. The transformation was magical. Just beating on a drum for 30 minutes a day had very positive results.
For that experince alone I say your child should do music just as they do athletics. It is the proper balance in life.
What advice do you have about practicing effectively?
Use whatever inspires one to spend the time alone that it takes to achieve their goal. Start off crawling before you walk and finally learn to run. Practicing something fast and making mistakes will result in playing those same mistakes forever.
Patience. Transcribing music from any place you hear it is best . Singing the melodies is even better.
Some students need a rigid routine, others are inspired by changing their routines. It does not matter. Getting into your space to practice is all that matters. Finding a place to focus and do the hard exercises over and over again will pay off.
