I started teaching two years ago at a private lesson studio in Denver called My Music Skool. My main focus was on piano and saxophone. Now I teach privately as a freelance musician. Two points I emphasize when teaching are practicing at least once a day no matter how long you play and learning what inspires you. There will always be some sort of theory I sneak in whether it's learning scales or building technical skills that will build confidence and ability, but if these devices aren't being applied to the type of music that inspires the student, then learning music becomes discouraging instead of fun. I have been teaching piano for nearly ten years now. I know that every person is different and that there is not one right way to teach or to learn. I work to find things that work best for each student. I believe that reading music is a very important cornerstone in learning to play an instrument. Once we have achieved decent proficiency in it, I like to branch out beyond a basic method book into learning music chosen by my students because practicing is a lot more fun, and therefore more likely to happen regularly, if we're working on music that is fun as well as educational. For me, enjoyment as well as developing proper, healthy technique is key. This means that student may have to do more gritty work than with other teachers, but this pays off as they get to tackle more challenging rep and ultimately can connect skills to repertoire more quickly. However, I always like to meet students where they're at. If they want to learn how to play their favorite pop song on piano, or want to audition for their local theater's musical theater production, my priority will always be teaching in ways that the student feels is relevant to their goals and interests. My lesson style is one-on-one. I like to create an environment where the student can be relaxed, yet focused, in order to get the most out of our lesson time. I like to start with review of the last lesson and any homework assigned for the student to work on. I graduated from East Carolina University in 2016 with my Bachelors of Music in Music Education. Since then I have taught in music studios, public school settings, and private lessons.
