Here are the things that I want to impart to my piano students in their first 10 weeks of lessons: That I love music and I love teaching them That music lessons are creative and exploratory That creating music is fun and easy That music can tell stories That music is more than pushing down keys That music is art and involves dynamics, speed, feeling, etc. That singing and moving to music is just a part of how we do things in music education That playing the piano the right way (ie. with the right technique) is really important The importance of understanding, feeling and moving to meter (duple/triple) The concept of home, tonic/dominant tonalities and being able to hear and create bass lines That music is made up of chords, patterns, and melodies That they can transpose music into different keys I use Alfred Piano Method, it also dives into intervallic reading, as described above. I believe in music lessons there must be a balance. Especially on an instrument like guitar. Lessons should consist of a list of certain things almost like a checklist. First there is warm up and tuning. To make sure you are warmed up and in tune there are exersizes I like to start with my students. For all beginning students , I typically start with Mel Bay's Guitar Method and Hal Leonard but I also like to throw in some of my own personal lessons that can help students grow faster. Once the student has good understanding and grasp of the fundamentals, My student and I will both decide on repertoire that they can play according to their abilities. I graduated with my Bacholers in Music and Pyschology with a focus on opera voice in 2009. In my performance program I really grew as a vocalist and learned how to overcome my own obstacles and improve my vocal technique for myself. I feel confident now in sharing my experience and my education with my students so they are able to really grow and improve as well. I started professionally and privately studying vocal technique when I was 17 and prior to that I was performing musical theater in school and in community performance groups. Read More

I am fortunate to have met, associated and studied with, performed and recorded with some of the greatest musical minds of the innovators of traditional modern jazz, and also a few of the eternally legendary classical musicians. I have two degrees in music but more important is the gift that I have been given to know these amazing people in my life.
