For beginner students I start with chord shapes. We'll learn what notes are in the chord, where to find the root note of the chord everywhere on the fret board and how to play that chord in multiple postions. Then we work on switching chords in basic progressions and later we move onto scales. For my intermediate students its more about technique and theory. When it comes to teaching piano I use the faber method. I like the combination of theory, ear training, and sight-reading that it offers as those are fundamental skills to be a good musician. If they are able to successfully complete those books, I go into solo repertoire and work on fingering techniques as well as reading music off a lead sheet as you never know when you want to play something and the sheet music is not available.
