What I like to do in my studio is, set realistic goals for the student. I use "challenges" to help students achieve their goals. And reward them when they achieve them. I like using a lot of games as well to make piano learning fun. So I teach a lot of theory aspects using games with timers, and flash cards, dry erase dices and prizes when goals are meant. I typically start each student off on a series of lesson books to help structure their learning in an academic way. However, I highly encourage bringing in classical pieces and students picking pieces of their own and bringing them to me to go over and learn. I’ve found that this keeps the students highly motivated and passionate about their lessons and practice. For beginners, the books are highly recommended, but for more advanced students who have finished the books, we begin classical technique exercises meant to help with the increasing level of difficulty of their songs.
