If a student comes to me with more experience, I will select repertoire based on their interests, technical proficiency, and past repertoire. I very often write mini-etudes and technical exercises for each one of my students based on their personal musical path. Other repertoire I have assigned varies widely and includes Bach, Beethoven, Bartok, Scriabin, Shostakovich, Faur, Ravel, Barber, Glass, Cage, Oliveros, Ligeti, Saariaho, and Ellington, along with Great American Songbook repertoire, jazz standards, text pieces, pop songs, improvisation exercises, and animal song imitation. I am a traditional teacher in that I focus on laying a secure foundation to prevent any unnatural habits from blocking the students progress in the future and helping the student become completely independent of the teacher. The student learns the skills necessary to teach themselves. I also co-lead an original Latin/Jazz project, Two Worlds, with drummer Rodrigo Bonelli and pianist Michael Shea. With this group, I released a full-length album called 'Stream of Stars' which is available in stores. Two Worlds has played festivals and clubs throughout the Northeastern U.S. including DROM, Miles Cafe, Shrine and Sugar Bar in New York City and Ryles Jazz Club, The Fireplace, The Beehive, and The Vernissage in Boston. My experience goes back to High School when I would give casual tutoring sessions to friends. In college I started teaching lessons in theory and composing/songwriting. I like to encourage students to get on a practicing schedule especially for younger students as it helps them get more interested in the instrument. I like to start with modern pop/rock styles to get the student interested in the instrument then mix in Jazz so we can talk about more complex theory and also mix in a little classical so we can talk about technique and form.
