This will vary given the student's abilities and particular intentions for study. In general, I focus on five distinct areas of learning: technique, theoretical understanding, reading, intuitive playing/learning by ear, and performance. I like to keep each lesson fluid and organized, by maintaining structure within segments of study. Within these segments we may venture into something unanticipated, so long as the student expresses interest, readiness, and the ability to learn. Read More

I strive to develop a customized learning approach for each of my students, depending on their needs and goals. I implement a combination of the Faber method, Alfred method, and compilations of works by talented piano pedagogs such as Keith Snell, Martha Ashleigh, Ingrid Jacobson Clarfield, Melody Bober, and Julie McIntosh Johnson. I have found that by using a combination of these resources I am able to focus on all eras of music history and style, as well as cover all bases of theory fundamentals. Read More

Drawing a grand staff and then drawing notes on the staff help the student understand how music is written. Once basic theory is introduced, I look for music that I hope the student will enjoy playing. I know that there is music I love to play and music I would rather not play. It is important to find at least once piece that the student really likes and looks forward to playing. Read More

I became a teacher because I believe everyone holds unique gifts and creative ideas. I want to encourage and guide every individual I teach to feel confident in their gifts and apply them to music! I believe music is such a joy to be shared to the world, and we all have the potential to share it. I started teaching private lessons in 2017, and I found it so rewarding that I have continued teaching ever since. Read More

When a person decides to take steps to learn an instrument, most do so not realizing that they have within themselves something unique to offer. Whether it is to play for enjoyment or for a more serious endeavor, as the instructor, my goal is to learn what that unique thing is, and guide the student in their own journey to becoming the kind of player they envision to be. Therein lies the joy of being a music instructor. Read More

My methods differ for each instrument. For piano I will start with Alfred's basic piano course if the student is a beginner. It helps students visualize the basic techniques for sitting and playing the piano in a way that will prevent injury. From there we walk through the book until the student understands how the keys and reading music works. After this, I start to assign different songs and/or assignments that match the student's learning style and interest in music. Read More
