I was my own first student. I began teaching myself how to play the piano over 10 years ago. Throughout this process I learned how to approach some typically confusing topics in much more digestible ways. A benefit to starting out as a self taught musician is that I had to learn how to make sense of things myself rather than memorizing information that a teacher fed me. A main focus of mine as a teacher is encouraging regular practice routines where the student can solidify the information we discuss in our lessons as well as uncover new questions they may have about the subject. In the Suzuki program, the parent provides the proper home environment so that the child will succeed. Traditional Methodology is most effective with children aged 8-18. Children in this age range are ready to read notation, so this skill is taught from the beginning. The pupil is taught to identify the notes on the staff and keyboard, to recognize rhythmic structures, basic theory concepts such as key signatures, scales, chords, and forms, and the meanings of musical terms and signs. I continued to study classical, pop, and jazz stlyes, and began performing at age 7, and teaching in high school. Since college, I have maintained a private studio, either at home or in pretigious music schools, and have also taught in the school setting. My students have gone from 5 year old beginners to very accomplished piano and guitar players. The student gets to pick the first two songs of the lesson, and I pick the next 2. That way, they get a lot of choice for the lessons. With the pandemic, the students have been very consistent with not missions lessons, which is pushing their progress as well.
