I am a creative and passionate musician who recently relocated to Washington, DC. I have performed nationally and internationally as a trumpet player and enjoy playing chamber, orchestral, and solo music. Before I lived in DC, I played and taught in Chicago, Denver, and Cleveland. I love teaching and have extensive experience as a private teacher with all ages and ability levels. My teaching studio in DC is a comfortable environment and each student gets personalized attention, depending on his or he unique needs. Read More

I have 18 years of experience in the Music and Education. My time has been combined and/or divided between performance, classroom instructing, supervision and project management. Upon graduation from Central State University I continued to study with the professors there to gain more musical knowledge. I have received credit in over 170 music classes. I studied with some of the greatest musicians there are, for ten years as I pursued my musical destiny. Read More

I have started students with John Thompson's piano series and Alfred's basic piano series. I have found using the best of each music series has been beneficial. The introduction to theory and different genre of music helps to keep students interested. So just one basic piano book may not be enough. Adults and youth with a little experience, I have used a the Piano lessons series. This series of books allow students who are self starters to progress faster. Read More

For beginning students who are children, I usually use the Alfred Music Piano Methods series, and include music theory and ear training as a part of the curriculum. Once students have grasped the fundamentals, I will introduce solo repertoire appropriate for receital performances to encourage and motivate their learning. For adult students, I love to spend time to figure out the students musical interests, and use the types of music they enjoy to guide my instruction so the lessons can be engaging and fun. Read More

I customize the curriculum and repertory for each of my students based on their personal goals, which we will discuss in the first lessons. Do you want to play for yourself or to perform publicly? What kinds of repertory appeal to you and how much time do you have to practice? From there we will create a plan that best meets these goals. For beginners, this will include a method book (I often use Faber Piano Adventures for young beginners and Alfred Adult-In-One methods) to get you started. Read More

We also learn age-appropriate songs, of course. In lessons with young children, everything is play-based. I make learning experiences into games, and we move between activities quickly to accommodate the kids' attention spans and keep them engaged. I gradually shift my focus to technique and more advanced repertoire once the students reach middle school. For high school and adult voice students, we focus primarily on technique and learning repertoire. In an hour-long lesson, we might spend 15 or so minutes warming up and doing technique exercises, 10 or so minutes working on music theory, and the remainder of the lesson working on one or two songs or arias we've picked together. I see it as a great honor and serious responsibility to be able to teach music. Based on my own experience, the connection between the teacher and student is one of the most important factors in developing a student's passion for music, and encouraging them to progress. While my teaching approach varies with each individual, all students should feel supported and encouraged to be expressive players and thoughtful musicians. Read More
