My teaching experience dates back to my undergraduate days. As a French Horn teacher, I teach multiple schools in China. As a piano teacher, I coached elementary and middle school students on basic techniques of playing French horn, like articulations, scales, essential etudes, and orchestral repertoire. As a highschooler I was very motivated to help the young musicians of the Middle School. I would dedicate a period of my day to running sectionals and teaching students in the Middle and High School. Though I was never paid for this work, as I was just fine doing it for free, I learned much about effective and ineffective ways of communication in teaching. My approach to teaching is centered around whether the student is having fun. My goal is never to force anyone to become a professional in our lessons. If you want to get to that level I can certainly help, but I am more concerned about having fun playing trumpet and piano. We will do a lot of listening homework as well, since listening is just as important as playing. It's important to identify the natural transitions throughout a student's voice, usually based on classical technique for healthy sound production. I believe strongly that curiosity is the greatest catalyst for learning. A student learns best when they the subject interests and excites them. Therefore my first task as a teacher is to select repertoire that the student loves and that is appropriate for their skill level and developmental trajectory. Many teachers will force their students to practice soulless, irrelevant technical exercises.
