I recently graduated Cum Laude from the Berklee College of Music with a Bachelor of Music in Music Business. Therefore my first task as a teacher is to select repertoire that the student loves and that is appropriate for their skill level and developmental trajectory. Many teachers will force their students to practice soulless, irrelevant technical exercises. My teaching style is best referred to as a facilitator. Essentially, I promote self-learning, helping students develop critical thinking skills and retain knowledge that leads to self-actualization. I prefer to guide students by letting them think for themselves, pointing out when mistakes are made but also encouraging them to learn and grow from them. The draw back from this is that it can be a bit time consuming, but I feel that at the end of the day, this helps a student so that eventually they will be able to learn by themselves without a teacher. I like for my students to develop a passion for music by showing them what can be accomplished with a little hard work and discipline. My method includes teaching them the fundamentals of music, such as reading, harmony, theory, and songwriting, while at the same time showing them how to play their favorite music while applying these fundamentals.
