The key ingredient to learning is interest. I believe that my students need to have an interest in what they are playing so that they can keep their minds and spirits engaged. Rudiments require attention and practice, but there is much more to learning an instrument than just technique; passion also needs nurturing. My teaching experience actually started when i was a senior in high school. The music teacher had ask me if i wanted to be his assistant. I taught notation to the student's. Conducted the jazz band and the choir. In small groups i would teach them music theory and correct any problems the student's had with their music. This was a very challenging experience for me. I always encourage my students to progress at their own pace and have fun while doing it. Not everyone improves and learns at different paces and I make sure to emphasize that with my students and when possible with their parents. I personally think that seeing a student reach a new goal is an important part of my job and it makes it all worth it in the end.
