My teaching experience began in college when I taught private lessons to students. I was a teacher at a preschool for those 6 years so parents that knew me became interested in me teaching their children. In the past few years, I have worked with adult students who have wanted to learn for their own personal interest or to add to their growing list of instruments they already play. I have found that a blend of modern and classical music is a great way to increase a student's technique while keeping them engaged and having fun. Read More

With beginners (children and adults alike) I like to start with the Faber and Faber Piano Adventures method books. I tailor each student's learning experience, creating an individual path to success. I stress the fundamentals of music (learning to read music, proper physical technique, etc.) in an engaging and fun manner. Read More

One of the things I love most is the shock of parents and students who expect that either they themselves are going to dread the lessons or practice session or that their child will give up and hate practicing. Parents and students tell me how exciting they are to come each week and hit each milestone. I make learning fun! Simple as that. I have had so many students over the years who are so nervous and timid about playing or singing and by the time we get to the first recital, they are confident and light up on the stage. Read More

I usually start with Hal Leonard's Guitar Method Book 1 to get most students learning to read music. As we progress I begin to incorporate other materials and customize everyone's lesson to tailor to their distinct interests. Read More

Music is the center of my life, and sharing the knowledge and joy with students is my passion. I have been playing professionally for two decades in a variety of styles, and I hold a Ph.d. in Ethnomusicology from The Ohio State University. I have performed in around the world and recently completed a tour of India. Two of my recent albums were selected for the final 2015 Grammy Ballot. Read More

My teaching style feels relaxed but I work hard to keep students in their least restrictive environment. We dont want the student to be too challenged or bored. For this reason I am flexible with the content we work on and the order in which we complete different parts of the lesson. I give a lot of choice to students, maybe one day they want to start with working on some improvisation and want to work on their assigned pieces the 2nd half of the lesson. Read More

Students want to learn the piano for a variety of reasons. Some arent really sure they want to learn at all, but mom wants them to give it a shot! Others just want to learn that song on the radio! All are fine reasons to learn, and each deserves a personal approach. For very young students just learning the basics, structure provides direction and comfort, so Id recommend jumping into a beginners curriculum such as by Alfred or Hal Leonard and going from there.
