I like to create lesson plans around what kind of music the student wants to learn. For example, most young girls want to learn Disney princess songs. So I print them off their own copies of the songs that they had expressed an interest in learning. I feel like if the student is not interested in playing or singing the music that I am giving them it could be the best curriculum in the world, but it won't help them learn if they are not actively engaged in the music they are singing or playing. Each student progresses at their own pace; therefore, I don't impose "deadlines" as to when a student should advance to the next level.  A lot of that comes from the individual's motivation and reason for learning the instrument.  During a lesson, I go over concepts in a given piece, help discover where more difficult passages will be, and show the student the techniques needed to master those elements.  The main part of the lesson, however, is on the STUDENT...and by that I mean PRACTICE to prepare for the next week's progression. Every student has a different learning style and learns at their own pace. I myself am a tactile kinesthetic learner and tend to teach this way. For example, I enjoy using colored pencils to highlight articulation and dynamics. If a student is younger, I use stickers to help students keep track of where they are in the piece. I like to get to know my students so that I can tailor the lessons and materials to their own interests. We have a mostly informal interaction, but I point out ways to improve playing at each lesson. I enjoy watching a student make progress and help celebrate when a particular goal is reached (such as the completion of a lesson book or the mastering of an important piece).
