I'm a brass, piano, and guitar instructor based out of Seattle, Washington who loves working with children and young adults to acheive their musical goals. I graduated from Cornish College of the Arts in 2009 where I studied with Trombonist Julian Priester, Pianist Dawn Clement and Bassist Chuck Deardorf. The dedication it takes to learn an instrument can help develop skills values that will benefit the student throughout life, regardless of profession. Therefore, I believe that the process of learning music is more important than any particular performance that we work toward, so I take a pragmatic approach to instruction. I take one lesson at a time while careful to scaffold the information. I want students to improve, but I also want them to know what it is that they must do in order to become a competent musician. I can be tough, but at the same time, I don't mind changing directions and moving from say, ear training to sight reading or some other approach. Combined with that I have my own curriculum of style studies and songs which include many genres of music. If students want to learn how to read music I usually suggest the Hal Leonard series of books for their particular instrument to start with and then I suggest more advanced materials for the style of music that they want to start specializing in. Every student learns at their own pace, and in their own way. Discovering what type of learner your student is (kinesthetic, auditive, visual), is essential in providing examples and assignments for the student to work on. I do believe that with encouragement and patience, anyone can learn the noble art that is the language of music, you just have to find and fuel the student's interests, make that flame grow into a passion, and then lead with the example, 99% of the time the student will follow, the other 1% of the time you just need to get creative :) Read More

I almost always use Alfred's Basic Piano Library for kids n adults, the same series for young beginners for younger kids. Time to time i use piano Adventure series by Faber n Faber. I focus on flash cards n sight reading books besides the main lesson book since a lot of students do not read well n try to memorize their pieces by ear. I believe strongly that students can't go so far without being able to read properly. Read More
