I always emphasize musicality in my teaching, because if as performers, we are focusing on being expressive, we'll convey our love of music! If a student can think about what the music is expressing, they will be more motivated to keep practicing. I focus on the fundamentals such as tone, rhythm, dynamics, timbre, basic music theory and history. I always give specific positive feedback, along with a tip for improvement. Finally, I always go over how, how much, and what to practice in lessons, so the student can learn what to listen for and focus on outside of the lesson, and keep improving during the week. Read More

I graduated from Khmelnitsky College of music with a focus in button accordion and piano, and I have earned my master degree from Tchaikovsky Conservatory in Kiev, Ukraine, the same institution that educated noted pianist Vladimir Horowitz and many other renowned performers, composers and educators. I performed with the Veriovka Choir, an award-winning orchestra that tours internationally to share the joy of music with audiences worldwide. Today I find fulfillment staying closer to home with my family and enthusiastically sharing music with my students. Read More

For young piano students I'm a fan of John Thompson method books. I get the student through beginners and then through at least the Grade 1 book. Then I introduce beginner piano literature books to help the student see a real music book. I work on music theory and how to map out a piece of music to learn it better. We start talking about musical style as well. For adults I use basically the same method but usually start with the Alfred all-in-one book. Read More

A good teacher wants to listen, assess and guide the student in the learning process according to the student's individual desires, goals and style of learning. This aquired style of teaching is non-threatening and success based. I also teach by analysis, guiding my students to observe how the music is put together, so that they understand the similarities and the contrasts from the start. This is a way to teach about the structure of music and alows for easier practice of the music between lessons. Read More

I believe on an emphasis of performance over theory; learning to make a kinesthetic connection with your instrument is most important in developing both a good sound and adequate technique. The value of a good warm-up is most important in establishing a successful practice routine. We are all pressed for time, so I help students focus on the most important elements of breath control, embouchure and articulation at the same time that they are acquiring technical facility through the logical development of scales and arpeggios. But more importantly, she can become her own judge of the sounds she makes. She has obtained an increased appreciation of classical music and improved her sensitivity to musical details. My third student had the strongest background, but the weakest connection to music initially. I have helped her listen rather than play. As she gradually develops a sense of good sound, her playing changed dramatically, and her practice management improved. Read More

Nothing is more rewarding than seeing one of my students develop a passion for music! Therefore, it's important that each student progresses at his or her own pace. I encourage this by setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson. Each student is provided a weekly practice journal. Acknowledging accomplishments helps fuel a students desire to progress, and makes students eager to learn more. By trying to find out what inspires the student, I can successfully tailor my instruction to their wants and needs. Read More
