This is the most difficult part of drumming. If I can teach a student this, then I can teach them anything. The advanced that can already hold a steady beat, I like to develop runs and fills on the drums. I can take them into a deeper understanding of how fills can take a song to the next level. I individualize my teaching methods for each student based on their ability level. After I assess the ability level, I find level-appropriate method books, scale studies, etudes, tone exercises, sight reading, and solo repertoire. I use method books that I am personally familiar with and like, but am open to looking for new, exciting options. I like to see where each student's natural talents and personal desires are headed and act as a servant leader to get them there. Students are encouraged to pursue music in the way that will keep them engaged reaping maximum benefits whether that be to build parts of their brain that would have otherwise lie dormant, or become the best solo performer they can be.
