That being said, for children and beginners, I will focused mainly on the basics such as: proper posture, proper guitar technique, basic chords, basic rhythms, warm-ups ... For all students, I encourage them to use Trevor Wye practice books, which include my favorite Reichert and Taffanel Gaubert exercises, warmups, and etudes. While learning the fundamentals, I have some beginner-level pieces and etudes to help hone these skills before students move onto more advanced repertoire. Therefore, it is important to let the students progress at their own paces with supervision and slight push. I encourage this by not only setting realistic goals for my students at each lesson and making sure we achieve that, but also by adding, from time to time, interesting notes about the history of music or composer's biography to captivate the students' imagination. I believe there is no "cookie cutter" method to teaching so I tailor my lessons specifically to each of my students. I have found that having a strong foundation in classical music sets the tone for musical excellence for all styles, regardless of age or musical maturity. From that perspective I like to start all of my students on The Arban's and Herbert L. Clarke Method books for trumpet. As we progress, I will add other method books/repertoire that emphasize what the student wants to learn or to highlight an area the student or I think could use improvement. Read More
