I attended CSUF for jazz guitar studies. I am very fluent in big band, swing, rock, funk, combo jazz and many other styles. I also have a lot of experience with being in a pit orchestra, playing for musicals. I have a great working knowledge of what it's like to be in a rock band and how to configure pedalboards. For my students, I like to see what type of music they are interested in and listen to a few of their favorite songs. From there we can learn chords (guitar, piano) and melodies for vocal lines. We could go the route of learning scales and theory, but since I didn't grow up learning that way, I'd prefer to go the more modern way by learning strumming patterns, chords, inversions, melodies and harmonies, and teach dynamics to make a song come together. I began piano study at the age of 5 and began teaching privately at a young age.  I have taught piano and been staff accompanist at Chatham College in Pittsburgh, Pa. and Fairmont State University in Fairmont, W.Va.  I am a member of: Music Teachers Association of California, Music Teachers' National Association, National Guild of Piano Teachers, American Guild of Organists, AFM, Local 47.  She is a founding teacher for the Carnegie Hall Royal Conservatory:  The Achievement Program.  I adjudicate for MTAC, MTNA, NGPT, SYMF and other California festivals and competitions.  I present lecture/recitals on women composers and their music at a variety of conferences throughout the United States and had the privilege of premiering the First Piano Sonata by Nancy Van de Vate at the 2001 Amalfi Music Festival in Italy. Firstly, I think building a good rapport with my students is important in establishing a comfort level that is conducive to learning. I've found that students(especially children) are more engaged, ask more questions, and have more fun in the lesson if the teacher makes an effort to connect with his or her student.
