My aim with every student is to develop an excellent playing technique. Good playing habits will bring out their best in any type of music. Understanding meaningful phrasing and giving their music a "voice" are also important skills. Regular practice is important, too, so having a piano or keyboard at hand is essential. For beginning students I like to begin with a combination of Hal Leonard's Essential Elements and Suzuki Method books. I find Essential Elements to be useful for learning the fundamentals of playing the instrument and music theory. However, Suzuki offers the ability for students to quickly play solo repertoire. I also incorporate learning and understanding scales for the purpose of learning fingering patterns and intonation. I specialize in teaching beginner guitar... even students who have never touched a guitar. I typically begin by teaching a very simple chord progression to a popular rock song, and by changing the strumming pattern, it's 2 songs in 1. By the end of the first lesson, I want the student to be able to play a song, not just random chords, so they can play along to it as practice. Then I assess what style, song, or band the student wants to learn so we can work towards playing material from that group or artist. Read More

Most of the pieces I chose on my own were movie scores or television theme songs such as The Wizard Of Oz, Star Wars, Titanic, and the Simpson's theme. I absolutely adored these pieces of art and still do to this day. It took a great deal of time and patience learning the classical repertoire my teacher would choose for me but over the years I have grown exceptionally grateful for the classical, romantic and impressionistic era’s of music and art that my teacher exposed me to.
