After starting piano performance at age 12 and music composition at age 14, I shortly graduated from Vanderbilt University in 2012 with a Music Composition/Theory degree and have composed nearly 4 hours of Symphonies, Concertos, Soundtracks, Jazz Combos, Woodwind Ensembles, Choral works, World musics, and other forms of Postmodernism. I start with pushing students to develop good habits early on in their playing. I like to get my students playing songs in their genre of choice as soon as possible. This method generates interest in their instrument from the very begining. I select their repetoire based on what techniques we are currently working on and find songs that will force them to develop those techniques in order for them to effectively perform each piece. At the start of the lesson, I will emphasize tone and air control which I've found makes a huge difference as a warm up. The primary books I will work out of are Hal Leonard's Essential Elements. As students progress and I feel that they have a handle on the basics, I will slowly start to incorporate other repertoire that will be exciting to play and perform.
