I am a drummer and percussionist of 23 years. In that time I have played with the University of New Hampshire Wildcat Marching Band, Symphonic Band and Pep Band. After graduation I played with two fife and drum corps, the Pawtuxet Rangers Fife and Drum Corps and Middlesex County Volunteers. For beginning students, I start with a basic method book. Most often, they are enrolled in school band already and I am happy to use whatever method books their teacher uses. Otherwise, I start with the Rubank elementary method for trumpet and cornet. We incorporate music-making (simple songs and tunes) from the very beginning. Once the student has a grasp of the fundamentals we will begin with some more focused exercises to allow them to play gradually ,ore challenging and rewarding repertoire. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching private lessons part time 24years ago, and have been consistently teaching students in my home studio for the last 11years. Encouraging regular practice on a consistent schedule is one of the key points I like to emphasize for younger students, as it tends to help the student progress and gain a passion for the instrument. I keep my lessons low pressure and laid back. This is a fun hobby for my students and I try to keep it that way! At the same time, I work with the student to set goals to keep them accountable and making progress. I don't make students perform in front of anybody else unless that is a goal of theirs to work towards. I always try to guide my instruction in a fun and engaging direction to keep the student interested and motivated to get better. I am able to do this by being energetic and enthusiastic about my teaching and I feel its important to make the material matter to the student. When a student has confidence in their abilities they are able to achieve much success on their specific instrument. As I also previously mentioned, getting to know what inspires a student and knowing them on a more personal level helps develop a better student/teacher relationship and thus yields a better outcome on the instrument.
