I also work with basic fundamental structures that formulated the basis of my work with previous teachers such as Paul Kantor and Julia Kurtyka.. this includes basic practice exercises, and techniques, how to hold the instrument and how to shift etc. and how to sculpt a particular sound with the bow at various segments of a phrase i.e. bow distribution, bow speed, and the relationship between bow hold bow arm relation with the types of sounds in a particular palette). My main music philosophy is to teach sound before sight: teach students to hear the music, and then read the notation. For beginners, I want them to become well acquainted with their instrument so I begin with the basic fundamentals, and then teach some traditional tunes before moving on to reading music. For students who can already read music, I like to work on sight-reading as well as finding solo repertoire that can be performed at recitals. Read More

For beginners, I generally stick with the Faber Method books, as I enjoy their unity of music theory and practical application more than other method series. It is my goal to remove students from methods as soon as possible- somewhere around early intermediate skill level, so that we may engage with more meaningful repertoire from the 'greats', as well as give the students the tools to take agency over their own repertoire choices, including transcriptions of popular media.
