When I think of teaching, I think of how rewarding it is to get to know each student and their families. I encourage parents to stay in the lesson (not required). There is so much to learn and see. My students each have a plan each week outlining not just WHAT to practice but HOW to practice. I often say if you practice HOW I am asking you to practice, you will learn a lot and progress. The art form of music is both a cerebral and deepy visceral experience. And thus so I invite students to journey outward and inward to begin (or continue) studying music from both a scholastic perspective as well as treating the art form as a purely aural experience. My teaching studio enables students to take home recordings of themselves so they have an audible track record of their progress. Every student learns differently, and is born with inherently different strengths, weaknesses, rhythms, and song. Read More

I am a singer/songwriter who enjoys the process of creating a song from start to finish. I also am a studio singer and love the experience of being in the studio recording my own original music. I graduated in 2009 with a contemporary music degree that provided a well-rounded musical education. My favorite part of my educational experience was the time I spent at the Contemporary Music Center at Martha's Vineyard for a special off-campus artist program. Read More

I emphasize the importance of proper posture, technique, the ability to read music, and knowledge of the fretboard. Accordingly, I always assign students exercises meant to develop and strengthen a variety of aspects of both left-hand and right-hand technique. The pace at which we move through the exercises is dependent on the student's own level of motivation and how much practice they do. I encourage students to practice daily for at least 30 minutes, but recommend more if they wish to see more dramatic results. Read More

For piano, I typically use the Faber Piano Adventures Series; however, I am open to other method books as well. The Faber series has theory, technique, lesson, and performance books, each with different skills and techniques to learn. I find that those books offer the most comprehensive learning. In addition to the Faber books, I also utilize online worksheets for supplemental learning. For guitar, I typically use online worksheets and chord sheets, and from there, I encourage students to purchase specific guitar books they are interested in (for example, Disney books, classic rock books, Beatles books, etc.). I have been teaching students since the age of fifteen, accommodating every age between four and sixty-five. I have maintained a private studio for the past five years, before which I taught at the Florida State Summer Music Festival for intermediate and advanced pianists, delivering practice coaching, masterclasses, applied lessons, and lectures. I have taught group classes at Indiana University at every level the university offers, from complete adult beginners to graduate music majors. Read More
