For beginning students, I initially focus on their setup and how to hold the instrument properly. Having this solid foundation helps in the future to avoid injuries and negative habits. After that, I use the Essential Elements books and Suzuki method books as a guideline with supplemental materials. At this point I would also begin introducing solo repertoire appropriate for a first recital performance. For adults, I try to find out what the student is interested in, and guide my teaching according to their level of interest, keeping lessons engaging and fun. Many times that includes playing fiddle tunes, which is very exciting to me too, since I have been involved in Irish culture since I was young. Instruments: Flute Piccolo

First I will assess each individual student based on their own skill level and requirements. In each lesson we will work on fundamentals of flute techniques, whether that is posture, embouchure, and/or finger techniques. In each of these lessons I hope to instill knowledge of music theory and history. We will learn many different styles of music ranging from the Baroque, Classical, Romantic, and 20th Century flute music. My teaching experience dates back to showing simple rock grooves to the kids at my fathers church. I had very little knowledge about music back then but I knew from early on that I had a niche for teaching. During my time at Rutgers University I was priveleged enough to work for the Rutgers Extension Division which specializes in different lesson and summer programs. Through the Extension Division I was able to gain experience as a counselor, working with children ages 6-18, and also as a substitute drum instuctor. Read More

I am always very patient with all my students. I never try to put too much work on the student and always believe you should have more then one chance to get it right. Music is not a test and their is no failing, there is only the end result, which ends when the student makes progress, no matter how long it takes. I like to concentrate on my students abilities and ask that they bring 100% to their lessons as most of the lesson time is spent on the instrument; some lessons may be more informative for students interested inan in depthunderstanding of music theory. My student load for teaching was quite large right off the bat, but I found out quickly that it was absolutely wonderful to teach so many different kinds of singers! The students I teach at the college are mostly Theater Arts majors, but all of them enjoy learning a basis in classical technique. Next year will mark the beginning of my tenth year of teaching at Muhlenberg, and I couldn't be happier or more proud of the students I have taught! Read More
