I teach strong instrumental fundamentals, along with music theory comprehension, sight-reading, and ear training. I also like to emphasize ensemble playing using instrumental duets. I use appropriate level texts based on the student's experience first and age level second but always teach from what will make either younger students or adults feel comfortable. Fun is a must in one's progression but focus is key to success. Singers use a lot of different emotions and they need to feel very much at home with their teacher in order to explore those moods. I teach taking into account the the student's age level and ability, and I'm very sensitive to time-constraints that most students have during their week. For beginning and intermediate students I like to teach out of the Rubank Method books. They have pieces that focus on one issue or another and are short enough to encourage students to simply become used to the idea of practicing every day. Once the student has some basic fundamentals it is always nice to work on a piece of repertoire. Again certain challeges are adressed and met through this as well, but the goal is also to have a chance to perform it, displaying a practical application to the student's accomplishments and hopefully encouraging the student to become further interested. I have been steadily teaching private lessons since I was at Berklee, nearly 10 years ago. I almost always have taught lessons at my own studio where students come to me because that always seems to be the most conducive environment for learning and getting inspired.
