My teaching experience dates back to my time in high school, as I taught group guitar lessons with the Franklin Community Education and Recreation Department as well as private guitar lessons from 2011 to 2013. In both of those environments, I typically taught children ages 6 to 12, most of whom were beginners on their instrument. For beginning students who are children, I typically start with Bastien Piano Basics, Faber Piano Adventures, Alfred's Basic Piano Library etc. Once the student has progressed to have a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce solo repertoire appropriate for their first recital performance. Formally taught in music at age 11y-17y in drums/percussion/piano, guitar, bass guitar, trumpet, and voice. Started my first 2 piece band at age 8y. Playing drums/percussion/voice and keyboards. Books I have used in the past include the Essential Elements series and the Melodious and Progressive Etude series. I also understand the importance of enjoying what one is playing, so I always urge students find pieces or books for themselves that they are interested in, and incorporate them into my lessons. I love it when my students ask questions. Being curious is one of the most important elements of learning an instrument and fostering the students innate curiosity and giving them a space to personalize their interest in the instrument is vital to my teaching style. Of course, there are basic expectations, which grow from year to year, but I don't mind straying from classical rep into other genres or experiments with sound because it allows them to connect what they are learning in lessons, to their inner voice that needs a vehicle of expression.
