My performance and education career began as early as my freshman year of college. I have been fortunate to perform over 1,800 professional commitments in my career as well as teaching roughly 25 students. Some performance highlights of my career have been performing on four national tours, playing two contracts with the Hershey Park band, recording with different artists, and of course performing with the Marine Corps and the Air Force bands. With my bass students, I begin with basic technique and ear training. My first goal for a student is to learn one of their favorite simple folk songs by ear, while also developing basic musical skills and instrumental technique. I believe that it is extremely important to begin developing a students aural abilities and creativity early on. I use the following method books, depending on the age and ability of the student: Alfred, Bastian and John Thompson. For younger students (under eight years old) I usually use the Alfred all in one book.. for older children, I use the Bastian set of four books: piano performance, technic and theory. I stay flexible to the individual students' needs. I try to keep the student engaged and ask many questions to help them become their own best teacher. I will give assignments and create goals but also want the student to be self motivated. I will not be overly strict when it comes to practice. I like to have the student approach music with joy and curiosity. I like to keep the learning positive and help the students find their voice within music and find what motivates them intrinsically.
