For beginning students who are children, I greatly emphasize vocal exercises to help strengthen their voice. Once the student has a grasp of the fundamentals, I will begin to introduce repertoire based on the genre of music they prefer, as well as basic songs that would benefit them to learn. I usually begin by working through the Suzuki method books, and then from there try to branch out into other material depending on the student's skill. I'm always open to trying different songs and even encourage my students to find songs that they want to play. While working on different pieces, I'll also focus on techniques of holding the cello and the bow, things that I consider very important to correct and improve, especially at a young age. Read More
