With my bass students, I begin with basic technique and ear training. My first goal for a student is to learn one of their favorite simple folk songs by ear, while also developing basic musical skills and instrumental technique. I believe that it is extremely important to begin developing a students aural abilities and creativity early on. One thing I strongly encourage is the student to go at his/her pace. There is no judgement on the capability of learning an instrument and because of that I completely understand how long (or how short) a student can learn the drums/piano etc. I try to make every student feel accomplished in a session especially when the material being taught is new and intimidating. But regardless, there will always be a sense of accomplishment because as long as the student feels as if they accomplished something(small or large) I will make it my duty to make sure they know it. After graduating college, I was the resident trumpet at the Barter Theater in Abingdon, Virginia, before completing three contracts as a show band musician on board Celebrity Cruise ships. I have toured Europe with my university's top jazz ensemble, as well as toured the United States with two different professional drum corps, Carolina Crown and Jersey Surf. I am a classically trained, working percussionist with a passion for bringing music to life. I graduated from Wittenberg University in 2016 with a Bachelor of Arts degree in percussion performance and participated in multiple honors ensembles as principal percussionist while enrolled. I have performed professionally at a variety of events around Austin, Texas, including with the Austin Klezmer Band and the Austin Civic Orchestra. In my own music practices, I strive to be both technically skillful on all percussion instruments from the marimba to the snare drum to the cymbals and, yes, even to the triangle, as well as musically knowledgeable in order to manifest musical interpretations that are just as expressive as they are contextually appropriate.
