I've been a musical director of K-8th grade private school as well as substituting for local band teachers .During that time I taught children all aspects of music, as well as preparing them for recitals and competitions. I've taught students privately at my home studio for more than 20 years, many of my students have gone on to further their education at the university level. I've worked with schools in developing after school music programs that have been successful. Read More

Music and teaching have always been an essential part of my life: This was true as a teenager and student, when I worked in dance music bands, played in a classical guitar duo, performed in a Rock musical or taught classical guitar and electric bass. This was true when I taught literature, philosophy and mathematics as a middle and high school teacher. It's still true today, when I play Jazz guitar in various Seattle based Jazz bands, or write and produce songs and film tracks. Read More

I knew I wanted to be a teacher even before I knew I wanted to be a musician. I have been teaching for the last 7 years (as long as I've been studying), and I absolutely love the challenge of communicating with students who learn in different ways than I do. As a musical teacher, I believe one of the most important goals is to learn to have fun while you practice. If your goal is to become a serious musician, many hours of practice is key but that cannot happen if you don't have the drive and motivation for it, so you must first enjoy what you are doing. I have always found that young children give up on their instruments too quickly because they find it to be too tedious or even boring. Read More

As a result, I practiced liked crazy of my own volition and was able to realize my passion for music from a pretty young age, which I'm really grateful for. I would love to give that opportunity to other people interested in music, because it was so valuable for me. I'm very patient and warm and compassionate toward people and have had lots of nurturing influences in my life. I like to see people grow and believe that creative and expressive acts like music, are very fluid and don't have a one size fits all method. Read More

I'm cranky, strict, and impatient. Just Kidding! Contrary to many stereotypical views of old-style piano teachers, I try to stay upbeat, fresh, and FUN! I feel successful if my students are progressing, if they have fun, and I can motivate them. Read More

Guitar: For children, I begin with simple folk songs to teach them chords and strums. From there, we progress to picking patterns. For teens and adults, I use both folk songs and easy pop music. For both age groups, I encourage note reading and some classical work. For classical guitar, I use technique books by Aaron Shearer. Voice: I put a great deal of focus on breathing, open throat and support. Read More
