I began playing at the age of four when I first sat down to a piano. I began creating music from the first time I started to play. From there I began taking piano lessons up until I went to study music at the University of California Santa Barbara. At UCSB I studied music composition and recording at the UCSB College of Creative Studies. After college I played keyboards in a jam band that played original music and toured all over the west coast. In 2001 I moved to Seattle and began recording and releasing my own compositions. I started teaching piano in 2005 and have loved teaching ever since. I currently have over 18 students and we have recitals twice a year.
Lessons will start with an assessment of what the student wants to learn and what their goals are. From there, we will determine the proper approach to meet those goals while keeping things fun and interesting. Once a particular skill level and interest are established I will develop an individualized lesson plan for the student to fit their wants and needs. The goal with beginning students is to get them up and running right away with chords and melodies, learning the fundamentals while being able to play their favorite songs. For all students I like to extensively focus on knowledge of the fret board and the many possible approaches to mastering it, as well as looking at creative practice methods and daily routines. A musician’s method of practicing can greatly determine their rate of improvement. For more intermediate and advanced students the general focus will shift to topics such as ear training, rhythm, music theory and music notation (if desired) and, their application to the guitar.
There are several methods I use as a professor and they're all dependent on the student, their age and their goals. If they are younger, I like to employ elements of the Suzuki method because subjects like musical notation and theory might be too dense for the student. If the student has the aptitude/and or the discipline I can begin to apply a more systemic approach in terms of practice regiments like scales, practicing sight reading, their rhythmic feel, and even ear intonation and sight singing if the student is prepared for it. For real results and musical growth, consistency and discipline are key elements. There are several books that I particularly enjoy like the classic Dandelot, Louis Bellson Modern reading in 4/4 and in odd meters when they are more advanced.
I work with several teaching companies in the Seattle area and prior to that, I taught at The Stars Inc. School of Music and The Music Workshop in Miami. Over the past few years I have helped people of all ages get the results they want. Whether your goal is to learn traditional songs from your home country to surprise their relatives, or improve your technical or reading ability so you can get into music school, or if you’re just looking for help with your own original compositions, I’m willing and able to guide you through your journey.
There is not one method that fits all students and all styles. Young children and beginners on the guitar need to slowly develop strength and control of finger movements, while still being motivated when they learn how to play along with their favorite songs. Intermediate players often need help to get into a smooth flowing groove, to lock in with a rhythm or to phrase melodies. Advanced players might consider a few hints, tricks and exercises to improve their techniques or apply music theory to a deeper understanding of a music piece.-A major component of student success is continuity which I can provide as a teacher with lesson and practice plans. There will always be a goal to achieve or a project to work on. The lesson plan is the path to a successful project.-I consider myself to be successful as a teacher when a student graduates and moves on. Then they prove that they can apply the skills and techniques they have learned and they continue their journey of music of the music they love and create themselves. -

Students aged as young as 6 years old are able to start taking guitar lessons with the expert teachers in Musika's network. At this age, students will find it easiest to play a half-sized classical guitar with nylon strings, and will learn how to play the top strings of the guitar and simple melodies. As they advance, they will start to form a range of different chords and learn to play more challenging songs. Usually by the age of 10-12 years old, students are capable of playing a full sized guitar and want to progress onto the electric guitar.
As a preference, younger students should start off by learning on a half size or three-quarter sized acoustic guitar. If they are able to hold it comfortably, older students could start off using an electric guitar. A brand new student model guitar can be purchased for about $150 to $200. An electric guitar will also need accompanying amplification as well as guitar cables, which will incur additional costs. It is important a student enjoys playing their instrument, so higher quality guitars are recommended as they are easier to play.
Musika deals primarily with home lessons for students. The location is the only difference between our in-home lessons and our studio lessons. As they do not have to travel to their lessons, home guitar lessons can be highly convenient for those parents and students with a busy schedule. For younger students in particular, having guitar lessons in the comfort of their own home can be of great benefit. They will feel more safe and relaxed in familiar surroundings, allowing them to focus on learning and enjoying playing the guitar.
For students looking to start learning to play the guitar, we recommend that they do so with a particular goal in mind. You may wish to learn how to play your favorite songs, develop your compositional abilities, or learn music theory. Maybe you are an advanced player wanting to take their playing to the next level? Whatever the goal, the experienced teachers in our network can help bring these wishes to life. It takes time to learn and develop your guitar playing, and may take a couple of months before you start to achieve your aims. The best way to guarantee you meet your goals is through regular practice and lesson time.
Students typically start with the basics, such as how to hold the guitar, how to fret notes with one hand, and how to strum or pluck the strings with the other. The teachers in our network will cover sight reading, guitar chords, and basic music theory. All of which are needed for students to perform and understand the inner-workings of their favorite songs. More advanced students can work on jazz improvisation, classical technique, as well as rock or blues guitar solos.

We value Chelsea for the quality of her lessons, but also for the flexibility of her schedule. She has worked around family vacations, impromptu summer camps and the upcoming school year. I really like her. And as an adult student, a good teacher who keeps the pace up but still keeps it reasonable in terms of difficulty is really hard to find. She does a great job of explaining little detail things in terms I (as a musically challenged human) can understand. I'm having a blast! 10/10 would recommend!

Dan gave private clarinet lessons to my daughter, Annie, for two years. During that time, she excelled as a member of the middle school band, and maintained first-chair. Dan is an excellent teacher, and Annie looked forward to having one-on-one time with him. In addition to practicing pieces with her, he helped her with scales and greatly improved her tone quality.
Select all the days/times the student would be available to start lessons. Selecting "3pm - 7pm" means the student can start as early as 3pm or start as late as 7pm. It is important that you select as many days and the widest window of start times for each day as possible. That will help us make a match with one of our teachers.Ok
