My teaching experiences have come from my time spent playing in a variety of ensembles in the different colleges that I attended. I was often asked to lead groups in rehearsal and this was where my teaching experiences first began. It started with my colleges Big Band and then with a Saxophone Quartet. Being able to lead a group of musicians and helping them get better everyday was the most fulfilling feeling I got during my time in school and pushed me to try my hand at teaching younger students. Instruments: Voice

I usually start with breathing exercises and vocalises for all students. I also use the exercise books Concone and Sieber. After the student has grasped the breathing and the coordination of the vocalises we move on to repertoire that is age appropriate. I encourage my students to sing in Italian as this helps them to acquire a proper technique because Italian uses pure vowels. I have studied with some great teachers and feel like I need to pass on those methods to the next generation of musicians. Read More

I teach my students to practice a growth mindset. As musicians, I find that we can easily become perfectionists. While I think it is important to critique ourselves so we can improve, my policy is that my students critique themselves based on their own progress. For example, instead of comparing themselves to other students at an audition, I encourage them to compare themselves to who they were yesterday. I truly believe that students can more easily reach their full potential when they are focused on growth rather than competition against others. Read More

I have experience providing lesson content in both an in-person and online environment. I got started teaching originally providing informal instruction to friends who were learning guitar. They thought I excelled at it and encouraged me to pursue providing instruction further and so I started to seek out and find students to teach. I also have experience arranging popular music for classical guitar and set up a website to teach fingerstyle guitar through tutorials I provide on some of the songs I've arranged. Read More

Finding what inspires the student is an important part of my teaching. With this information I can successfully tailor my instruction to the students desires and needs. I acknowledge accomplishments which helps fuel the students desire to progress and makes them eager to learn. It is important that the student progress at their own pace. I take an individualized approach based on learning styles and strengths. I believe in positive reinforcement, especially with younger students!
