My teaching philosophy has five basic elements that I always follow: differentiation, engagement, feedback, ownership, assessment and questioning. I teach students with different music levels, backboards, and ages. I try my best to start with what my student can do then extend within student's own context, so each of my students is very unique and special for me. And I always hope to cultivate my students, especially young students to become a better person through their music learning journey which is how I learned most from my music teachers. Read More

It's my goal to meet a student where they are, and maintain a big-picture mentality. I like to know what other interests they have so that I can draw parallels between those and music. While I am demanding of my students, I set high standards only because I am confident in a student's abilities. Watching potential become reality is rewarding for both student and teacher, and that happens more quickly with high levels of accountability. Read More

The art form of music is both a cerebral and deepy visceral experience. And thus so I invite students to journey outward and inward to begin (or continue) studying music from both a scholastic perspective as well as treating the art form as a purely aural experience. My teaching studio enables students to take home recordings of themselves so they have an audible track record of their progress. Every student learns differently, and is born with inherently different strengths, weaknesses, rhythms, and song. Read More

Age-friendly materials are my favorite to use. For very young pianists I often buy books with lots of color and large print like Kjos's Piano Party. Kjos and Alfred are two of my favorite publishers, but I am willing to work with materials your family may already own. Flashcards are an important tool for many children to become fluent at naming/reading notes. I also like to have students complete written theory assignments, and, to help students from getting bored, I often "reward" them with single pieces of fun sheet music that can be performed for recitals and competitions. I have a diverse portfolio of performance experiences ranging from large ensembles to chamber music, and from solo recitals to new music premiers. Professionally, I have worked as a freelance musician across the country playing holiday ceremonies to pops concerts, and various other recordings projects. Diversifying my playing experiences has helped me to be a well rounded and knowledgeable performer, that I impart to my students. During my undergraduate degree at the University of North Texas, I frequently performed chamber music with my colleagues in the surrounding community and discussed the importance of music in schools. Most of the work that I have had the privilige of delving into have been masterclasses with individuals trying my very best to incorporate aspects of what I have learned from my time with Don Weilerstein who I consider to be a major mentor figure to me in development both as a musician and a person. As an avid practitioner of Tibetan Buddhism, I have often to my ecstatic wonderment found patterned sychronocities between this sort of brilliant visceral teaching various aspects of Tibetan Buddhism,(particularly the practice of Shamatha and elements of Visualisation), Eastern Energetic practices and spacial/temporal awareness—playing with various methods of getting out of the body to become the rhythm and structure a phrase. I have been teaching students since the age of fifteen, accommodating every age between four and sixty-five. I have maintained a private studio for the past five years, before which I taught at the Florida State Summer Music Festival for intermediate and advanced pianists, delivering practice coaching, masterclasses, applied lessons, and lectures. I have taught group classes at Indiana University at every level the university offers, from complete adult beginners to graduate music majors. Read More
