I am new as a teacher, but am up for the challenge and opportunity to work with and inspire students to find their own self-expression as well as learn practical skills to help them reach their musical goals. Consistent practice is a key point, but more importantly pairing technical skills with music a student enjoys playing helps ensure a desire to keep learning and progressing. I'm looking to help students of all ages learn how to engage with and express their creative selves in a way that motivates each person to explore their instrument further. Read More

Each lesson is an event and is taken in a positive, enthusiastic frame of mind, with vigor and spontaneity. Giving praise is extremely important in my teaching, making my students feel intelligent and creative. It is surprisingly constructive, illuminating my ideas of what the student should hold important. Growing as a Suzuki student, I have lived the immersive style of learning by listening to music, and know the learning advantages it provides. Read More

Similar to what is written above I prefer an approach that is rooted in the fundamentals. It is my belief that learning these well can serve a student later on when the music starts to become more difficult. Most students I have that have learned in this way tend to not get overwhelmed and are able to transition to higher levels of playing more easily. One of my favorite quotes is "The advanced level is mastery of the basics" which I have found to be true. Read More

My teaching experience dates back to my college days, as I began teaching college-entrance level music theory classes and private piano lessons. For the past of ten years, I have been teaching classical piano, music theory, ear training, jazz piano, jazz history/theory, and k-12 level school bands including young winds, symphonic band and jazz band. I teach students with different music levels and ages. And I speak Mandarin and English, and I have been teaching bilingually for almost my entire teaching career. Read More

My views on teaching or being an instructor are vast. I evaluate what stage one is at and focus on the easiest ways for a student to understand their instrument and approach the musical side of learning. Every individual is different and their understanding of rhythm, melodies, chord structure, and time signatures can vary even though the fundamental structure of music and theory is relatively the same. Age-friendly materials are my favorite to use. For very young pianists I often buy books with lots of color and large print like Kjos's Piano Party. Kjos and Alfred are two of my favorite publishers, but I am willing to work with materials your family may already own. Flashcards are an important tool for many children to become fluent at naming/reading notes. I also like to have students complete written theory assignments, and, to help students from getting bored, I often "reward" them with single pieces of fun sheet music that can be performed for recitals and competitions. I was also was recognized as a semi-finalist in the Chopin Foundation of the United States' 2020 Competition, as well as a quarter-finalist in the Hastings International Concerto Competition, competing on scholarship after being selected as one of the top three North American candidates. In the past twelve months, I enjoyed immensely successful debuts as featured soloist with the Shreveport Symphony and Symphony New Hampshire, performing the first two piano concerti of Sergei Rachmaninoff.
