For beginner students who are children I typically just want them to get comfortable with the piano keys and then find simple songs with simple patterns to get a grasp of hand placement, timing, and the joy of playing. For adults, I try to find out what they are interested in, e.g. (song structure, chord intervals, scales, hand technique) and adjust my lessons accordingly to help them meet their goals. Read More

I prefer to use the first few lessons to get a grasp of what the student knows and what theyre looking to learn. Hal Leonard has a great starter program that is good for most students to begin with. Once some of the basics become established we will start learning scales and arpeggios. These help with finger dexterity and are also very important for all styles of music. For older students I like to know what type of music specifically they are looking to play and for what reasons theyre looking to play. Read More
