I have a very free teaching style. I am very organized and structured when it comes to teaching and my lessons, however I want my students to have fun, and feel that they can come to me with any request's that they have for their lessons. One thing I enjoyed about receiving lessons when I was younger, was how my teachers would teach me the basics and let me go from there and tell them what songs or techniques I wanted to learn next! I have my teaching degree from Indiana University in Music Education with a piano concentration. I have experience teaching in a traditional school, private school, home school, community building, and private music studio lessons for over 20 years. I encourage my students to practice consistently and to have fun! I like to move quickly through lesson books so that students have a sense of accomplishment and are able to get to repertoire that they thoroughly enjoy! Read More

I have been teaching on and off since 2010 and now teach almost exclusively from my home studio in Bloomington, IN. I've had the experience of teaching everyone from 4 year olds to advanced adult students and implemented various teaching methods for the many different minds learning styles. I always liked to look at the art of music like learning a language so I have since learned to create individualized lesson plans for my students that gives students plenty time to "speak", that is learning the fundamentals, phrases, and tools to share their personal story and to study the vast pedigree of music that has come before them. I prefer to use the first few lessons to get a grasp of what the student knows and what theyre looking to learn. Hal Leonard has a great starter program that is good for most students to begin with. Once some of the basics become established we will start learning scales and arpeggios. These help with finger dexterity and are also very important for all styles of music. For older students I like to know what type of music specifically they are looking to play and for what reasons theyre looking to play. Read More

Age-friendly materials are my favorite to use. For very young pianists I often buy books with lots of color and large print like Kjos's Piano Party. Kjos and Alfred are two of my favorite publishers, but I am willing to work with materials your family may already own. Flashcards are an important tool for many children to become fluent at naming/reading notes. I also like to have students complete written theory assignments, and, to help students from getting bored, I often "reward" them with single pieces of fun sheet music that can be performed for recitals and competitions.
