IUSB, Music Theory and Education
I’m a passionate musician who loves sharing the joy that music can bring with others. I began playing the piano in 2nd grade and have continued to grow for the past 22 years. Getting together to play music with different bands or orchestras is one of the must fun pastimes. There is always something new to learn! Practice makes perfect they say. I have played with several bands, church worship teams, and other groups throughout the years. It helps to keep my musical genres I can play expanding all the time.
I started doing lessons by helping as an accompanist for local band competitions. Seeing new musicians take the next step in their musical journey is a huge blessing to me, and any chance I get to encourage someone in that I take it. Regular practice is super important to continue and maintain growth. I have a lot of experience in several music genres and enjoy playing all of them. Any chance that a student has to play in recitals, groups, band, orchestras, etc I definitely encourage them to do so, and I will actively help them to prepare for all of them.
I prefer to use the first few lessons to get a grasp of what the student knows and what they’re looking to learn. Hal Leonard has a great starter program that is good for most students to begin with. Once some of the basics become established we will start learning scales and arpeggios. These help with finger dexterity and are also very important for all styles of music. For older students I like to know what type of music specifically they are looking to play and for what reasons they’re looking to play. The goal is to keep things engaging and fun. Establishing a feeling of growth is super important.
My goal as a teacher is to make sure each student feels like they are getting something out of the experience. Knowing what the goals of each student are allows for a tailored approach to each lesson. I like to establish markers to reach by certain times while still being realistic as well. Every student will get out what they put in to it. Making sure a student knows when they have accomplished something good or impressive is important. I want all of my students to feel like they are constantly progressing.
