Graduate Degree: Cincinnati Christian University
My name is Dan and I grew up doing church music in the greater Cincinnati area. I have performed for weddings, funerals, and church services. In high school, I was a part of band, chorus, and drama. I sang in the Mayfest high school choir with the Cincinnati Symphony Orchestra. I have a Master's degree from Cincinnati Christian University. I taught piano lessons in the town of Sharonville when I was a student. I now reside in the Southern Indiana town of New Albany. I come to your home for lessons to be convenient.
I began piano lessons when I was 14 years old, and began teaching students in my early 20's. I taught for the Cincinnati Music Studio in Sharonville, Ohio until during this time. I have taught students as old as 5 up to adults, also. For the younger students, I ask that they are proficient with counting and their alphabet. I like playing music related games with students and also try to build a working relationship in addition to the method and theory of music education and pedagogy. It is important to have a balance of learning and fun.
For children who are beginning students of piano, I prefer to use Bastien or Alfred curriculum. These are available on Amazon or most music stores. For adults I prefer to use "The older beginner piano course." If you have a curriculum already, I am more than happy to review it to see if it could be used also. I am open to families with multiple children or adults of any age. It is never too late to learn something new. With children, I encourage clapping, counting, and any other movement to teach the concepts of rhythm.
While I am firm about daily practice to improve, most every one I work with finds me easygoing and accommodating. I have worked as a therapist with children and their families but the role of teacher is a different relationship. I do require students have a working instrument to practice daily and regularly. This can a piano or keyboard that is usable. Feel free to ask me about practice, because it is integral to the student's improvement. Parents who reward practice in any way will see practice can be integrated into a student's day much like other routines.
