For beginners with voice, I teach students about the voice and how to sing healthily. It is very important to learn how your body works and how to sing properly without damaging your voice. For elementary school-aged students and younger who are just starting out, I will typically see if the student is familiar with, and a fan of, any classic or contemporary pop or rock music. If so, then basic chords and rudimentary music theory is where I like to start. Each lesson will be solely based around the needs and wants of the student based on their age-level, experience, and goals as a musician. We will work on many different vocal exercises and warm-ups to make sure we are strengthening every part of the vocal range. Ear training and music theory exercises can be implemented as well for those students who would like to improve their overall musicianship. As for repertoire, students may bring in whatever they are interested in learning, and/or I am more than willing to choose songs that I think would be fun and challenging within the genre the student wishes to learn. I teach students of a variety of ages and skill levels and I enjoy developing unique curriculum to fit each students needs and stylistic interests while incorporating elements of theory, ear training, singing and general music fundamentals into the lessons. I feel that teaching using real songs is the best and most engaging way to learn.
