Instruments: Trumpet
Again, my teaching style reflects my own experience. I learned the most from the teachers that recognized that the trumpet is an incredibly phisical instrument and each player brings a different physique to the instrument. A recognition of each player's strengths and weaknesses, both physically and mentally, allows me to be the most effective by targeting techniques that work and finding new approaches to those that do not. A student who is comfortable and confident as they learn to play the trumpet is one who will continue to do so throughout their entire life, and will enjoy themselves while doing it. Read More

The most important thing for any student of any skill level is to be excited about playing and practicing their instrument. For beginners, I start by introducing the instrument and how all the parts work together to make music. We then move on to the basics of chords and scales, along with exercises to help build dexterity in the fingers. For intermediate or more advanced students, lessons are catered more to what that particular student needs, whether they wish to work through particular songs, styles, or techniques. Read More

My preferred methodology uses the Alfred series books, as well as the Faber Piano Adventure series as supplemental material. I use a combination of note names and intervals to teach reading skills. I also like to incorporate theory into every lesson. Once we have the basics down, I like the student to tell me what he/she would enjoy playing, and I'll do my best to incorporate that, or something similar to that. Also, I prefer that the student have access to a real piano rather than a keyboard. Read More

Alongside the Assistant Band Director Mr. Yuji Jones, I was tasked to help teach, drive, and critique students both in their music and marching capabilities. For the final week of band camp, I was able to lead the saxophones alone during their music rehearsals. Since I usually just taught one on one, being able to work with a group of young musicians has truly impacted my teaching process, keeping everyone engaged into learning, following directions, and creating a fun but effective learning environment to prepare them for the rest of the year. I like to utilize many avenues of teaching and learning music. There are a handful of books I like to use for both beginner and advanced guitarists. The internet is a vast resource that contains just about anything you would want to know! Google and YouTube are great for learning songs, techniques and theory without need for a teacher or even an instrument. For intermediate to advanced players, I have some books, authors, guitarists and Internet personalities I might point to. Read More

I have been teaching private instrumental music lessons for two years now. I have gone through a four year degree program in which I've had the opportunity to gain peer teaching experience as well as teaching within various school districts for individual, small, and large ensemble settings. I have also been teaching dance at my mom's studio for the past 6 years. I help instruction with dance moves and group coordination as well as helping guide the students' ears to the specific musical lines they are interpreting. Read More

The difference between a musician who can play a bunch of songs ,and a musician who can play any song that he/she can get into their head, is simply this: The persons ability to identify , in musical terms, the music that they hear-either from a recording, or in his/her head. That is where my students have an advantage-because that is exactly what they learn. Most teachers teach music as a succession of mechanical events in a given order, or as interpreting notes on a staff into performed music. Read More
