I teach my students to read music as well as to play by ear. I host 2 recitals each year. We learn one song start to finish and I hire a professional band to learn and perform the songs with my students at a local establishment or at my studio. I encourage all of my students to perform with our recital band. As far as books, I prefer to use the "new Breed", by Gary Chester, the ''Art of Bop Drumming'', by John Riley , and the ''encyclopedia of reading rhythms'', by Garry Hess, but there are many other books I recommend for specific needs. I find teaching only to be effective if the student is intrinsically motivated to learn more: I like to find a groove or pace that the student feels confident and motivated to practice, and I tailor the lessons to address any problem areas without losing their attention. I find short excerpts of lesson material to be the best way to teach. Short and sweet! For example, for a 30-minute class, three 10-minute exercises made up of: a lesson or two from Mel Bay; 1 new chord; and a pop song that combines the two. Read More

With beginner students I start by establishing good foundation through method books by Simandl and Todor Toshev which include technical exercises for both hands as well as little popular melodies to keep the student interested and develop their musicianship. With more advanced bassists I introduce exercises, etudes and methods by Franois Rabbath, Bottesini, Hrabe and others as well are pieces form the standard double bass repertoire ranging from baroque to contemporary composition. There is one golden rule for all learning: do it and you'll get better at it. So the bottom line is you will improve according to how much you practice, and I cannot practice for you! For all of my students, I typically start with teaching (for more advanced students at least reviewing) the fundamentals of breathing for singing. From there I move on to phonation: how to produce a healthy sound, in coordination with and supported by the breath. After the student has begun to grasp these fundamentals, I begin to introduce solo repertoire based on the where the student is developmentally and their goals. Read More

I began teaching private lessons at the beginning of my time at Michigan State University. I have experience teaching all ages and skill levels including very young first timers up to experienced adults. In addition to private lessons, I have taught at the Apprentices in Jazz Workshop in Fort Lauderdale, Florida as a woodwind instructor, improvisation teacher, as well as big band director.
