For beginning students who are children, I start with the Faber Piano Adventures which includes the theory book, so all is learnt together. The keyboard is learnt from the first lesson. Depending on the age of the student, most just play he two black notes with the white notes of CDE. Doggy D is in the middle. My journey into piano teaching began 2 years ago when I started working with a few adult learners. Since then I have had the opportunity to work with kids and adults of all ages and levels. Teaching is something I find incredibly rewarding and take very seriously. Watching a student progress and gain confidence is something that brings me joy and satisfaction. I do not have a specific book that I work out of, though if the student has one that they work out of I would be happy to accommodate. I make my own lesson materials using musical notation software and cater the lesson to the needs of the student. Every student is different and requires special attention. For example, a beginner percussionist would start off learning how to read and notate rhythms all the way up to 16th notes to start. I would then move into how to hold drum sticks and how to hit a drum. I would build upon these concepts to facilitate lessons to come and tailor the lesson to the individual. Read More

I am a very hands-on teacher. We do lots of improvisation and call and response games and sometimes I turn on a record or even bring a guitar to jam with the student. Playing drums is a very visceral, tactile excersize, and I often tell students, "That right there,that is how it's supposed to sound! Memorize that feeling and try to recreate it everytime." Beginning piano students who are children will begin with the Faber and Faber lesson books which slowly progress the student through techinque and rhythmic exercises built into easy memorable songs. After building a strong base of fundementals I will the begin to introduce and teach songs the student wishes to learn alongside traditional literature to continue the technical progress.
