So I did. I also engaged with a Masters program at Hunter which I enjoyed and definitely improved my skills as a teacher in the Fall of 2009. Ultimately, I did not stay in that program because I was already teaching so much in a so many different settings. In short, I wanted to put all of my energy and focus into actual teaching rather than the formality of a Master's or state certification. Read More

My teaching style is very much praxial and based off of skill reinforcement. For any instrument, I will incorporate the Kodaly method (solfege) of musicianship into the curriculum. For me, my goal is to teach the student how to learn for themselves. I focus on practice techniques, assessment of tone, sound, rhythms, pitches, etc. Rather than spoon feed all of the answers to the students, I wish to encourage each musician to develop their own critical mind towards the art that they create. Here's how many drum lessons I've taught: An average of 15 lessons per week times 50 weeks since 1993. 15 x 50 is 750 per year. 25 years of 750 lessons is 18,750, and I have fine-tuned my lesson plans all along the way. Between 2013-2018 I taught a minimum of 30 lessons weekly and had to employee an assistant (an advanced student) to teach my beginners. My students often see me for years. I have taught at Berklee College Of Music's Summer Percussion Festival, School Of Rock, IKnow Music, Join The Band, Santa Monica Music Center, Modern Music, Pop/Rock Academy, Pedrini School Of Music, Walpole Music, and Boston Music Co. Im a working composer, hailing from the Pacific Northwest, who is familiar with both the rigors of musicianship and the exploratory nature of creative work. I was awarded a masters degree in 2012 from Western Washington University where I also began a lengthy creative partnership with a non-profit dance company. Additionally, I lent my talents to some of the finest animators in the Seattle area, scoring works appearing at the Sundance Film Festival, the Seattle International Film Festival, nytimes.com, vanityfair.com, and numerous other venues. I believe that lessons should be fun! I had to overcome a lot of stage fright when I was a beginner, so it is important to me that the lesson environment is fun, low-pressure, and encouraging. I check in with my students frequently to see how they are feeling about trying new exercises and techniques, if they are understanding the skill I am teaching, and how they see themselves making progress. Hello, I began teaching professionally 9 years ago in my home studio. I first started with guitar lessons. I am very passionate about aiding and supporting the growth of students. I provide students with the skills needed for the complete understanding of the language of music. This equips the student to learn any kind of music that is desired. Students are then able to learn classical, jazz, blues, rock, and popular music. Read More
