I started my own studio at the age of 23. I found this to be one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. In 2000, I entered the Music Education program at The University of Memphis. I continue to teach privately. I have taught children as young as 5 to adults of the age of 72. I have also taught string orchestra for 12 years. After 20 years of teaching, I still have a strong desire to share my knowledge and love of music with others. Read More

I have always loved and appreciated music however, I did not gain my passion for music until I was shown its power and affect through the teaching of high school music educators. At all ages, my lessons begin with a composition and theory-based approach. We spend time talking about music, form, and function to gain a greater understanding of the art. Musical concepts are often-repeated, so what is learned once can be applied again and again, and I use this to establish and build upon a solid foundation so that we can make reasonable strides toward the student's goals. In addition, my lessons are goal-focused, and I make sure that everything we learn builds toward a single goal. Read More

Typically, lesson plans are build around students goals. Some students may not have an interest in learning from a "traditional" approach from a book. Although this is highly recommended, I create different lesson plans for each individual student. I typically use and coach students from "Stick Control: for the snare drummer", "Syncopation for the modern drummer" and "The Blue Book" for drums. From time to time, I have also taught with "fakebook" charts for jazz drummers as well as play along tracks of various artists. Read More

Instruments: Piano Ukulele
Although I have been involved in studying and performing music since an early age, I did not teach music much until I retired from my career as a university professor. Since then I have taught for about 10 years total, beginning guitar, ukulele, and piano (beginning through intermediate), first for a music store and later in my home. I have recently moved to Kyle, where I developed my teaching studio, but the Covid pandemic led to my stopping teaching for some time. Read More
Instruments: Voice
My teaching style focuses on student-lead learning, where I will present a technique and then have the student analyze for themselves the effect it has on their vocal mechanism. The goal of training is to produce smart singers; what is the point of singing one song well if you can't apply the same techniques to another? Through problem-solving out loud, my students quickly learn to analyze their own performances and apply corrections on a consistent, active basis. Read More
