I haven't had much teaching experience, but I have worked with teenagers throughout this last year while getting my Associates of Arts degree over at Lone Star Community College. My high school choir director asked me if I would like to start helping out high school students with providing voice lessons, and of course, I said yes. I helped out three seniors in high school this last semester, and two out of the three of them are actually heading to Texas colleges to pursue a career in music. Read More

For beginning students, I usually start with a reputable method book that will allow them to advance in "grades" as the skills get better. At earlier stages of learning, the focus is on the technique towards learning the instrument. As a student progresses into intermediate and advanced stages, several pieces from the solo repertoire (and if available ensemble pieces) become part of the curriculum. Throughout the advancement in levels, I try to focus on selecting pieces that the indivdual student will have interest in while balancing pieces necessary for learning more difficult musical techniques. During the first lesson, I get to know the student, find out their interests and determine which course will be the best start. The most important thing for all students is to keep the lessons engaging and fun. Piano: For younger beginning students, I typically start with the Alfred Basic Piano Library. Older beginners start with Alfred's All In One Piano Course. For adults, I find out what the student is interested in, and guide my instruction accordingly. Read More

My teaching style focuses on student-lead learning, where I will present a technique and then have the student analyze for themselves the effect it has on their vocal mechanism. The goal of training is to produce smart singers; what is the point of singing one song well if you can't apply the same techniques to another? Through problem-solving out loud, my students quickly learn to analyze their own performances and apply corrections on a consistent, active basis. Read More
