Music has been a gift that has continued to give me joy throughout my life and I can't wait to share that passion with you! Although I started out self taught, I have had many learning experiences and lessons throughout my life. I have been a professional performing musician for over 25 years and have had countless amazing experiences performing and teaching music. I am great with young kids as well as teens and adults. I have performed in many incredible bands including Kamunique, Roots Man Project, One Sharp Mind, and more. I have also been a band leader and written music for Box Wine Trio, The Children, Silvate, The Balm, as well as perform and release music under my own name. I am passionate about all styles of music!
I love to get students excited about playing the instrument. The basics are important to learn but it needs to be fun first! If you are a beginner, let me show you some easy ways to play along with your favorite songs and get you excited to hear yourself play! Once you get the excitement, you will want to pick up your instrument and practice every day. My philosophy is simple, it is better to play a small amount of time on a consistent basis than it is to practice once for an extended period. Of course, the more time you put in the more you will get out of it, but you should enjoy practicing.
For beginners, I like to start by teaching some basic versions of songs that you love. I will also start out teaching some basic chords and strumming patterns. I can show you the proper way to hold and play your instrument so that it is comfortable and sustainable. I will also be teaching you some scales which you can use to play any song you hear. Did you know that once you learn the major scale, almost every song you hear will fall on that scale? For more intermediate players, I can help you bring out tones and sounds that you have not yet discovered. I can also show you how to use some more advanced and interesting scales and grooves to help tighten up your playing.
I provide enough material and information to keep you going through the week, or for however long you decide to take between lessons. I will show you chords and give you websites demonstrating how to form those chords with your hands. I will also provide you with scales that you can use to learn any melody you hear! I am flexible enough to find what interests you and my passion is infectious. I have had many happy students over the years and some still play their instruments 15 years later! I also make sure to go at your pace. It is not a race and you will find that you learn at very different speeds than others, I felt like a slow learner when I started but I stuck with it and you can too!
