Typically with very young children I will start with larger scale motions as it is difficult for them to place their tiny fingers on the instrument and coordinate. My mantra is to practice for success, not to do a certain number of hours or drills; this is something I learned after practicing technical drills for several hours a day. I remain partial to the Liszt technical exercises. I also continue to use certain exercises I find useful and not too time-consuming. I usually start my violin students with Essential Elements books, and draw some technical points of beginning lessons from Suzuki method.  I like to start students on a real piece of music as soon as possible so they can get a sense of accomplishment sooner than later. For adults, I am more flexible and will ask what it is they would like to learn, then I will use many of the same beginning techniques tailored for their own musical goals. Read More

I have taught all ages and skill levels, from absolute beginners to advanced apprenticeships. To me it is extremely rewarding to see a person take their love of music with them into their life. I learned a lot from the dozens of teachers I took private lesons with growing up. In 2010 I was a counselor for a music camp in Upstate New York. I worked with young kids and helped teach them pop/classic songs. I've had a Diaspora class in college on teaching drumset to beginngers.
