Over 30 years of private and public/private teaching experience. I love to teach. In my lessons, I get to know each student personally, learn their strengths and weaknesses and proceed from there. I began teaching private lessons eight years ago during college. By the end of 2015 I had a studio of over 30 students. I tend to focus on developing a student's sound concept first, so that they can get a beautiful sound out of the instrument at an early age. I also encourage students to play ear-training games and develop an independent melodic sensibility early on. I began teaching while studying at Oberlin College, and have since taught private lessons everywhere I've gone, from Shanghai to here in New York, including bass, guitar, piano, music theory, and ensemble coaching. I always like to give the opportunity to the students to work on the material that they are more interested in. If the lesson is with a beginning student I work mostly on technique and when I feel the student is ready we move on to repertoire. I generally begin with Alfred's Guitar Method for very young students or adult students who are interested in learning the rudiments of music. For intermediate students we work on polishing technique. I also use the Royal College of Music series for young students who are interested in taking the ABRSM placement exam. I have adult students who also want to learn songs they enjoy listening to, so we work with tablature (numbers). Read More
