Most of my teaching time is spent in the classroom where I have taught music from pre-school through high school. I began my teaching career with seven years of teaching students with multiple handicaps and moved in 2001 to my current postion where I teach from pre-k through third grade. I currently also direct a middle school choir and our annual middle school musical. Over the years I have taught not only private trumpet lessons but beginner piano as well, withstudents ranging from 5 to senior citizens. Read More

I use Rubank methoh books for beginner, intermediate and advanced students. I will introduce material from the Arbans method when students have reached a desired level. In addition, I'll find material in the genre that is exciting to the student but also develops their skills and techniques on the instrument. I create individual lessons and goals for each student based what needs to be improved, and what inspires them to practice and get better I am a strong believer in proper techniques, and that they can be obtained simulataneously while studying many genres of music. As I teach students, I constantly change my approaches depending on the needs of my students. I encourage my students to practice and think about how to approach new materials to make it less frustrating for my students. In addition, I use familiar melodies which includes classical and modern selections to help support the learning. I also allow my students to decide what they want to work on, but in exchange that they must complete certain tasks to help them develop their skills. Read More

I'm a passionate instructor specializing in 5th-12th grade band education as well as retired adult students. My focus during my collegiate and graduate education has been jazz saxophone, but my early passion for clarinet and flute as well as classical music has carried on throughout my teaching career. I have performed with clarinet choirs, flute choirs, jazz big bands, and saxophone quartet. Saxophonist and Composer Julian brings a fresh ear to the world of modern creative music, drawing upon literary works and visual art to lend his compositions a singular character. Read More

Connection. I believe having a connection with the student is the most important factor. I strive to become close with all of my students. This way we can learn more efficiently while still having fun. I spend a small portion of lesson time getting to know my students and talking about what interests them. Sometimes, I'll take these interests and base the a lesson around it. While pushing the student to try new things, it's helpful to periodically take breaks and let the brain reset. Read More

For younger beginning students who are part of a music program at school, I typically have the students bring the books and/or handouts they're using at school to their lessons. Next, I observe the student's playing, in an attempt to determine where the gaps are in their development. This usually allows me to determine which books I will have the students purchase in order to supplement what they're doing in school in a way that will ensure complete and thorough development of basic fundamentals.
