I believe every beginner student must approach music with a desire to understand the core fundamentals of Classical music including music theory and history. As a teacher, it is my duty to keep the student interested and make the lesson plans enjoyable and fun. A balance between student and teacher is important in terms of goals, desires and methods. My teaching style adapts to the necessity, interest and pace of the students. If you are more interested in building a technique playing we can get very methodical studying from the books but if you really want to play, we are gonna play! A big part of my teaching is playing with the students or creating sequences (play alongs) so the student practices music in context. It could be frustrating and boring when technique is de-contextualized. Read More

For beginning woodwind students, I have had success using the Rubank method books as a starter. Alongside a method book, I like to work on material chosen by the student, as well as my own supplemntal exercises. It is important for the student to understand the musical concepts associated with the repertoire, as well as focusing on performing well. I also prefer to have my students keep a practice log book, in order to track their progress. For piano and music theory, I like to use the John Thompson method for beginner students, and the Bastien Piano Literature series for more advanced students. Read More

Singing is not the same as playing an instrument because you are the instrument. When I have a new student, they come in and we spend some time talking, singing, and breathing to see where they are at so that I can determine a lesson plan that is created specifically for them. As most people probably know singing requires good breathing, posture, tone and pitch and it's not a one size fits all. Read More

It depends on the student's age and level of skill, however, I like to focus on building a good rapport with a student while learning and cementing the essentials of cello playing: having a good posture, holding the bow, reading, etc. I prefer to have a process that is somewhat slow in the beginning and that gradually picks up as the student becomes more acquainted with the cello. If a new student already knows the basic things, I still like to do a quick brush up to see what bad habits need to be fixed and how we can move forward in the most productive way. Read More

Hello prospective students! I am a classically trained musician who began studying as a french horn player at age 8 and began guitar and electric bass studies at age 12. I've been playing for over 35 years, I have amassed a great amount of knowledge along the way from some of the greatest players on the planet and I've been able to help countless young bass and guitar students achieve and surpass their musical goals. My name is Luke V. and I am a Music Composition Major with a focus in Classical Guitar performance at SUNY Fredonia. I have been playing guitar and writing music for over a decade and playing drums for a little shy of a decade. I've performed in many small local concerts in the Suffolk County area as well as in upstate New York on the SUNY Fredonia campus. I've composed for many small ensembles including the Sewanhaka Highschool's concert band and a string quintet that I put together myself! Read More
